Seafarer Centre Supplies for Women Seafarers
Dear Colleague,

As you may remember, I sent an email at the end of last year to inform you that a health survey for women seafarers was being conducted by the International Maritime Health Association (IMHA), International Seafarers’ Welfare & Assistance Network (ISWAN), International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) and the Seafarers Hospital Society (SHS).

We have now finished collecting results and are currently completing our final analysis report which we will circulate within the next few weeks.
The survey has raised a number of issues which we feel need to be addressed, and we plan to work collaboratively with welfare organisations, shipping companies, ports, unions and government agencies to make long term improvements in these areas.
As well as other significant findings, many respondents said they find it difficult to carry a large enough supply of tampons/sanitary towels for long contracts and that they often find it difficult to buy these items while they are away.

We would greatly appreciate your assistance in helping to alleviate this difficulty for women seafarers, and so I am writing to ask whether it would be possible for you to stock sanitary towels and tampons for sale in your centre (if you do not already)? We will also be discussing this problem with shipping companies and other relevant agencies.

Please do get in touch if you have any questions about stocking these items or about the survey results in general. I look forward to sending you our final report.

Kind regards,
Caitlin Vaughan
